The Spirit from God

Masih ad-Dajjal, the false Messiah, is commonly translated in English as the Antichrist. The system of the Dajjal is to get mankind to absorb itself into this world; to strive for purely materialistic gains. This is why he is called the Antichrist, because he is the antagonist of Isa, alaihis salam (Jesus, peace be upon him). The opposite of materialism is spiritualism. Whereas Dajjal will remind us of the physical world, Isa, alaihis salam, came to remind the Bani Israel (Children of Israel) of spirituality and Allah.

Let’s use an analogy. As humans, we are prone to diseases that weaken us, and cause us misery. We go to the doctor who, by the will of Allah, helps us heal. In the same sense, straying from worshiping the Creator is a disease of the heart. It starts when one forgets about the bigger scheme of things and drowns him or herself in this world; the materialistic, physical world. To rid of this disease Allah, through His divine Mercy, sends the noble prophets who act as healers; they guide mankind back to the Creator.

This is what Isa, alaihis salam, was also sent for. He was sent to guide back Bani Israel (Children of Israel) to Allah because they had become materialistic. Their disease was a spiritual disease and to combat the materialism, Isa, alaihis salam, had to show them spiritualism. He had to guide them back to monotheism and, to do so, he became the very essence of spirituality. He became the ruhAllah, the spirit from God.

To further elaborate, let’s look at the way of the last prophet and that of Isa, peace be upon them both. In the tradition of the last prophet, peace be upon him, man is allowed to recognize and fulfill worldly needs. The prophet, peace be upon him, slept, ate, found comfort in his wives and friends and did not shy from teaching us how to please the spouse. We are encouraged to seek out rizq (sustenance) and we are allowed to acquire dunya; however, we are taught to recognize it for what it is; a test, an illusion, a mere phase in our lives that will soon pass. By contrast, the tradition of Isa, alaihis salam, was very different. He was a zahid (altruistic) in the truest sense of the world. By this, I mean that he slept little, ate little, possessed little and did not even marry. He shunned the dunya world completely and focused purely on spirituality. This is why, to my knowledge, no other prophet was given the title ruhAllah except for him. However, when Isa, alaihis salam, will return, he will follow the way of the last prophet, peace be upon him, and fulfill the worldly needs such as marriage.

On a side note, keep in mind that ruhAllah also means that Allah owns Isa’s spirit, alaihis salam. It is used to serve as a reminder to mankind that Isa, alaihis salam, is not divine but rather a noble messenger of Allah. Below is the only verse in the Quran where Isa, alaihis salam, is given the special title.

O people of the Book! commit no excesses in your religion: nor say of Allah aught but truth. Christ Jesus the son of Mary was (no more than) a Messenger of Allah and His Word, which He bestowed on Mary, and a Spirit proceeding from Him: so believe in Allah and His Messengers. (Surah An-Nisa: 171)

THe example of the last prophet peace be upon him is one that any human can follow, where as the example of Isa alaihis salam is one that very few people would be able to follow.

I don’t quite know the exact hadith, but the general context of it is that if you follow deen then dunya will follow you and this i feel reflects in a way the example of the last prophet peace be upon him
